A7 woofer

Hi, another new guy here! lol Actually I've been lurking for awhile, So what woofer do you guys like best in 828,A7 cab. 515B or 515-8G ? I have both and cab. has been drilled to accept either.

It depends what and were your using it for.

When loaded with a 416 and small 511 format horn
it's excellent but has limitations for auditoriums.

Loaded with 515B 75 watt( RMS or AES ?)
and large format horn 1005 it definetly has more punch. But then it's not an A-7 but an A-5

Loaded with 515 G as in 8GHP 200 watt AES or 400 watts rms and 1005 Horn or 94 Mantaray horn
You got something both in the High Fi range and
capable of LIVE sound reproduction with that
full clear sound and lot's of punch.

Your 515B would be 75 watt Continuous or RMS.
Your 515G would be 75 watt AES or 150 watt RMS.

The best one for the A-7 cabinet is the 515-8G
It was redesigned for that purpose :horn loaded cabinet like the original 515-8C.

I have to rectify my power rated comment.
There all in AES on that chart above. Meaning
that a 515-8B 75Watt AES is 150 watt RMS same as
515-8G. But the 8G sounds better in a front loaded horn enclosure.

Hey thanks for the reply,These 828 cabs have been rebuilt with extra bracing and foam in horn flairs they have an extra 1/2 inch layer on them making them a full inch and an eighth thick! they are very heavy, they will see some HiFi/Theater use and possibly some live sound FOH use. The only horns I have at the moment are a pair of very old cast 811's (not welded but sand cast) these have been coated with a bedliner type of coating and the vanes cut and glued on one end only. They are very dead absolutely no ringing at all, they currently have GPA 909-8A drivers installed on them. I will probably have to go with a larger horn in the future but for now these are the only ones I have. I think your right the 515-8G is probably the best choice.

AES and RMS ratings are similar, just taken under different conditions.

The difference between the two testing.

AES is over a long period like 24 hours.

RMS is over a shorter period 2.5 hours.

So if your going to run that speaker for a show of 90 minutes . Use RMS to determine the power
of your amp.

75W AES=150W RMS
200W AES=400W RMS
250W AES=500W RMS

I have the new GPA 515-8G's and GPA 515-8LF's, I'll have to compare them soon, both are designed for horn cabinets, both are good choices but my personal preference is to have the 515B reconed with an 8 ohm kit, I like the black spiders better than the beige ones used on the 8G and 8LF, they make the cone too tight IMHO, Dave.
